50 Cent and Kanye West

Our weekly round-up of the weird and wonderful world of pop music...

Everyone’s getting a bit antsy as the two-day summer draws to a close, and pop stars’ mouths are shooting off and writing cheques their butts can’t keep – OK, not that far from the usual. Normally blessed with the self-confidence of a particularly puffed-up Formula 1 driver, hip-hop ego-on-legs Kanye West is getting his excuses in early ahead of next month’s album release showdown with 50 Cent. First up, Fiddy challenged him to a presidential-style debate, but Kanye replied that it was the “stupidest thing I've ever heard” (fair comment) – now Kanye’s telling us that his album’s not finished yet, because there are always “little changes”. Just face the consequences, Westo.

Captain James Blunt was always a man to face the consequences. He now claims that “being sent away to boarding school at seven is as great an inspiration as any songwriter could have”. Even if you weren’t too keen to hear the new album anyway, that must put the mockers on it.

Manic Street Preachers beanpole Nicky Wire has never been shy about coming forward, and he’s excelled himself in the last few days with a tirade against Snow Patrol. Surely a “tirade” isn’t necessary? A stiff breeze could do for them. Anyway, Nicky reckons the Patrol are the biggest but also most hated band in Britain: “There’s something unredeemingly utterly sh*t about them… it’s a desperate form of music, the endless repeated lines, over and over, the same drab f***ing little thing on and on and on.” How’s the view from that glasshouse, Nick?

Lastly this week, aged pop nutter Gwen Stefani has vowed to put the forthcoming No Doubt reunion ahead of any plans to extend her fledgling family. Someone hide the contraception. Please.
